Mepitel is Molnlycke's range of wound contact layers and skin protection dressings, all built on Safetac soft silicone adhesive technology. Safetac adheres gently to dry, intact skin but does not stick to moist wound surfaces, allowing dressing changes with minimal pain and trauma. The Mepitel family includes four product lines: Mepitel (two-sided mesh for exuding wounds), Mepitel One (one-sided contact layer that also works as stand-alone skin protection), Mepitel Film (transparent breathable film for skin protection and radiotherapy skin reaction prevention), and Mepitel Ag (antimicrobial mesh with silver for wounds at risk of infection). Ships across Canada.

All Mepitel products share Safetac technology, Molnlycke's proprietary soft silicone adhesive. The key advantage over traditional acrylic or zinc oxide adhesives is that Safetac does not increase in adhesion over time, does not strip the skin on removal, and does not stick to moist wound beds. This means less pain for patients during dressing changes and less damage to newly forming tissue.
The four Mepitel product lines serve different clinical needs. Mepitel is the original two-sided mesh wound contact layer, designed to sit directly on the wound while allowing exudate to pass through to a secondary absorbent dressing above. It can remain in place for up to 14 days while only the secondary dressing is changed. Mepitel One is a one-sided wound contact layer with a perforated polyurethane film backing, making it easier to handle and suitable for use as a stand-alone protective dressing on fragile or damaged skin.
Mepitel Film is a transparent, breathable polyurethane film dressing — not a wound contact layer. It does not allow exudate to pass through. Instead, it is designed to protect fragile skin, cover superficial wounds, and serve as a secondary dressing. Clinical research has demonstrated its effectiveness in preventing radiotherapy-induced skin reactions in breast cancer patients. Mepitel Ag adds silver sulphate to the Mepitel mesh design, providing antimicrobial activity for up to 8 days in laboratory testing. It is designed for exuding wounds where there is a risk of infection or where reducing microbial load is a clinical priority.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
What is the difference between Mepitel, Mepitel One, Mepitel Film, and Mepitel Ag?
Mepitel is a two-sided silicone mesh wound contact layer that allows exudate to pass through to a secondary dressing. Mepitel One is a one-sided wound contact layer with a film backing, easier to handle and usable as stand-alone skin protection. Mepitel Film is a transparent breathable film dressing for skin protection and superficial wound coverage — it does not allow exudate to pass through. Mepitel Ag adds silver to the mesh design for antimicrobial protection in wounds at risk of infection. All four use Molnlycke's Safetac soft silicone adhesive.
What is Safetac technology?
Safetac is Molnlycke's proprietary soft silicone adhesive technology, used across their Mepitel, Mepilex, and Mepiform product lines. It adheres gently to dry, intact skin but does not stick to moist wound surfaces. This allows dressings to be removed without stripping the skin, causing pain, or damaging newly formed tissue. Safetac adhesion does not increase over time and leaves no residue on the skin.
How long can Mepitel dressings be left in place?
Wear time depends on the specific product and the condition of the wound. Mepitel (original mesh) can remain in place for up to 14 days while only the secondary dressing is changed. Mepitel Ag can be left in place for up to 8 days. Mepitel Film and Mepitel One may be left in place for several days depending on clinical conditions. Always follow your healthcare professional's guidance for your specific wound or skin condition.
Do Mepitel wound contact layers require a secondary dressing?
Mepitel (original) and Mepitel Ag are wound contact layers that require a secondary absorbent dressing on top to manage exudate. Mepitel One can be used with a secondary dressing or as a stand-alone protective layer on damaged skin. Mepitel Film is a complete dressing on its own and does not require or allow a secondary dressing for exudate transfer — it is designed for skin protection, not exudate management.
Can Mepitel dressings be used under compression bandaging?
Mepitel (original), Mepitel One, and Mepitel Ag can all be used under compression bandaging. Consult your healthcare professional for guidance on the appropriate dressing and compression combination for your wound type.
