Mepitel is Molnlycke's original two-sided soft silicone wound contact layer with Safetac technology. The open mesh design sits directly on the wound and allows exudate to pass through to a secondary absorbent dressing above. This means the secondary dressing can be changed without disturbing the wound itself, reducing pain and protecting newly forming tissue. Mepitel can remain in place for up to 14 days. It is designed for a wide range of exuding wounds including skin tears, skin abrasions, sutured wounds, partial thickness burns, lacerations, skin grafts, diabetic foot ulcers, and venous and arterial leg ulcers. Mepitel consists of a transparent, flexible polyamide net coated on both sides with Safetac soft silicone adhesive. The two-sided adhesion means it stays securely in place on the wound bed while also adhering gently to the surrounding dry skin. Because Safetac does not stick to moist wound surfaces, Mepitel can be lifted and repositioned without damaging the wound or causing pain.
The open mesh structure allows wound exudate, topical ointments, and gels to pass through the dressing. This makes Mepitel compatible with a wide range of secondary dressings and topical treatments. It can also be used under compression bandaging and in conjunction with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT).
Mepitel does not dry out, does not leave residue on the skin, and maintains its properties over time. Mepitel can remain on the wound for up to 14 days, depending on wound condition and clinical practice. During that time, only the secondary absorbent dressing above needs to be changed. This reduces the number of times the wound itself is disturbed, which can support healing.
What is the difference between Mepitel and Mepitel One?
Mepitel has Safetac silicone adhesive on both sides and an open polyamide mesh structure. Mepitel One has Safetac on one side only, with a perforated polyurethane film backing. Mepitel One is easier to handle due to the one-sided adhesion and can also be used as a stand-alone protective dressing on damaged or fragile skin without a secondary dressing.
Does Mepitel require a secondary dressing?
Yes. Mepitel is a wound contact layer, not an absorbent dressing. It requires a secondary absorbent dressing on top to manage wound exudate. The secondary dressing can be changed as needed without removing the Mepitel layer from the wound.
What sizes does Mepitel come in?
Mepitel is available in four sizes: 5 x 7.5 cm (10 per box), 7.5 x 10 cm (10 per box), 10 x 18 cm (10 per box), and 20 x 30 cm (5 per box). All dressings are individually sterile packed.
