What Is a 2-Piece Drainable Pouch?
A 2-piece drainable ostomy pouch consists of two separate components — a skin barrier that adheres to the body around the stoma, and a drainable pouch that attaches to the barrier via a coupling system (flange, click ring, or adhesive). Because the barrier and pouch are separate, you can empty and change the pouch multiple times throughout the day without removing the barrier from your skin. This significantly reduces peristomal skin trauma and makes the 2-piece system a popular choice for people with colostomies or ileostomies who require frequent emptying. This collection includes 2-piece drainable pouches from ConvaTec (Natura, Esteem, Sur-Fit Natura), Hollister (New Image), and Coloplast (Assura, Sensura Mio, Sensura Flex, Sensura Click).

Closure Types: Invisiclose, Visiclose, Lock'N Roll, Clamp, and Easiclose
The closure system at the bottom of the pouch determines how you empty and seal it. ConvaTec pouches use either Invisiclose (an integrated tail closure that folds and fastens cleanly without a separate clip) or Visiclose (a transparent closure for easier visual confirmation of a secure seal). Hollister's New Image pouches offer either a Lock'N Roll closure (a rollup-style bottom that locks into place) or a Clamp Closure (a traditional snap-on clamp). Coloplast pouches use Easiclose (a wide-outlet integrated closure) or a standard integrated closure depending on the line. Closure preference is personal — some users prefer the compactness of a fold-and-fasten style, while others prefer the security of a clamp. If you are transitioning from one system to another, ask your ostomy nurse to demonstrate the closure before committing to a new product.

Standard vs. High Output Pouches
Standard drainable pouches are designed for typical colostomy and ileostomy output volumes. High output pouches — available across all three brands in this collection (Natura High Output, Esteem Synergy, Assura High Output, Sensura Mio High Output) — are designed with a larger capacity and a wider outlet to handle the higher liquid volumes associated with ileostomies, proximal colostomies, or post-surgical states. If you have an ileostomy or experience high liquid output, a high output pouch is generally the more appropriate choice. The Assura Ileo High Output Night System also includes connection hardware for an overnight drainage bag, reducing the need to empty during the night.

Transparent vs. Opaque Pouches
Both options are available across most product lines in this collection. Transparent pouches allow you to monitor stoma colour and output without removing the pouch — commonly preferred in the early post-operative period or when monitoring is clinically important. Opaque (beige or coloured) pouches are discreet under clothing and preferred by many users for everyday long-term use. Coloplast's Sensura Mio High Output line uses a colour-coded coupling system where pouch colour (yellow, red, blue, green) corresponds to flange size — this is a design feature for easy size identification, not a performance difference.

Pouch Length and Body Profile
Pouch length affects both capacity and discreteness under clothing. This collection includes 7", 9", 10", 12", and 14" lengths. Shorter pouches (7"–9") are less bulky and preferred for active users or when wearing fitted clothing. Longer pouches (12"–14") offer higher capacity and are often preferred for overnight use or high output situations. Standard and mini sizes are available within several product lines for users with different body profiles or activity levels.

Finding Your Product
Use the brand filter on the left (desktop) or the filter menu (mobile) to narrow by ConvaTec, Hollister, or Coloplast. The most important variable when reordering is your flange size — confirm this from your current pouch packaging before ordering. Flange sizes in this collection range from 19mm (3/4") up to 100mm (4"). Within Coloplast's Sensura Mio line, confirm whether your barrier uses the Flex coupling system or the Click coupling system, as these are not interchangeable. If you are selecting a new pouch for the first time, consult your ostomy nurse to confirm the correct flange size and closure type for your stoma and lifestyle.

2-Piece Drainable Pouch FAQ

What is the difference between a standard drainable pouch and a high output drainable pouch?
A standard drainable pouch is designed for typical output volumes from a colostomy or ileostomy. A high output drainable pouch is designed with a larger capacity and a wider outlet opening to manage the higher liquid volumes associated with ileostomies, proximal colostomies, or post-surgical recovery. If you have an ileostomy or produce a high volume of liquid output, a high output pouch is generally more appropriate. Both types are available from ConvaTec (Natura High Output, Esteem Synergy), Hollister (New Image), and Coloplast (Assura High Output, Sensura Mio High Output) in this collection. If you are unsure which type is right for your situation, consult your ostomy nurse.
Can I use a Coloplast pouch with a ConvaTec or Hollister barrier?
No — pouches and skin barriers must be from the same brand and product line. ConvaTec, Hollister, and Coloplast each use proprietary coupling systems that are not cross-compatible. Within Coloplast, you also need to match the coupling type: Sensura Mio Flex pouches are only compatible with Flex barriers, and Sensura Mio Click pouches are only compatible with Click barriers — these two Coloplast systems are not interchangeable with each other. Always confirm your barrier's brand, product line, flange size, and coupling type before ordering a replacement pouch. If you are switching brands or systems, have your ostomy nurse assess compatibility before purchasing.
What does the flange size mean and how do I find mine?
The flange size is the diameter of the coupling ring that connects the pouch to your skin barrier. For a secure connection, the flange size on your pouch must exactly match the flange size on your barrier — they must be from the same product line. Your flange size is printed on the packaging of your current barrier or pouch. If you do not have the packaging, check the inside of the adhesive wafer on your barrier — the size is typically stamped there. Flange sizes in this collection range from 19mm (3/4") to 100mm (4"). Do not guess your flange size; an incorrect size will result in a poor seal and risk of leakage.
What is the difference between the Sensura Mio Flex and Sensura Mio Click coupling systems?
The Sensura Mio Flex uses a soft, flexible adhesive coupling that allows the pouch to move with the body, making it well-suited for users who are active or have an uneven or soft abdominal profile. The Sensura Mio Click uses a firm plastic click ring similar to a traditional flange, providing an audible and tactile confirmation of a secure connection — preferred by users who want the reassurance of a definitive "locked" connection. The two systems are not interchangeable. Your skin barrier will specify whether it is a Flex or Click system, and your pouch must match. If you are unsure which system you currently use, check the barrier packaging or contact us.
How often should a 2-piece drainable pouch be changed?
The pouch itself can typically be emptied and reused multiple times before it needs to be replaced — most manufacturers design their 2-piece drainable pouches to last 1 to 3 days before the pouch is changed. The skin barrier is typically worn for 3 to 5 days before replacement, depending on the individual's skin condition, output type, and activity level. Always change the pouch or barrier sooner if you notice odour that cannot be resolved by emptying, filter saturation, closure failure, or any sign of leakage under the barrier. Follow the specific wear time guidance included with your product, and consult your ostomy nurse if you are experiencing shorter than expected wear times.
