Mepitel Ag is Molnlycke's antimicrobial soft silicone wound contact layer, combining the Mepitel open mesh design with silver sulphate for antimicrobial protection. Like the original Mepitel, it sits directly on the wound and allows exudate to pass through to a secondary absorbent dressing. The silver sulphate provides antimicrobial activity against a broad range of bacteria and fungi for up to 8 days in laboratory testing. Mepitel Ag can remain in place for up to 8 days while only the secondary dressing is changed. It is designed for exuding wounds including skin tears, skin abrasions, sutured and surgical wounds, partial thickness burns, skin grafts, lacerations, diabetic ulcers, venous ulcers, and arterial ulcers. Available in 6 sizes, sold in boxes of 2, 5, or 10 sterile dressings. Ships across Canada.

Mepitel Ag consists of a polyamide net coated on both sides with Safetac soft silicone adhesive, containing silver sulphate and a cellulose compound. The silver sulphate acts as a preservative to inhibit or reduce microbial growth on the dressing. In laboratory testing, Mepitel Ag has demonstrated a 4-log reduction in a range of clinically relevant organisms including MRSA, VRE, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida species, sustained for up to 8 days.
The open mesh structure allows wound exudate to pass vertically into a secondary absorbent dressing. This means only the secondary dressing needs to be changed during the wear period, leaving the Mepitel Ag layer undisturbed on the wound. By reducing the number of micro-organisms on the dressing, Mepitel Ag may also help reduce wound odour.
Mepitel Ag maintains a moist wound environment in combination with a secondary dressing and can be used under compression bandaging. Like all Mepitel products, it uses Safetac adhesive that adheres gently to dry skin, does not stick to moist wound surfaces, and does not increase in adhesion over time.
For wounds that do not require antimicrobial protection, see Mepitel (original) or Mepitel One. For skin protection without exudate management, see Mepitel Film.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
What is the difference between Mepitel Ag and the original Mepitel?
Both are two-sided soft silicone mesh wound contact layers with Safetac technology. Mepitel Ag adds silver sulphate to provide antimicrobial activity against a broad range of bacteria and fungi for up to 8 days in laboratory testing. The original Mepitel does not contain silver. Mepitel Ag is designed for wounds where there is a risk of infection or where reducing microbial load is a clinical priority.
How long can Mepitel Ag stay in place?
Mepitel Ag can remain in place for up to 8 days, depending on wound condition and clinical practice. The antimicrobial activity of the silver sulphate has been sustained for up to 8 days in laboratory testing. During that time, only the secondary absorbent dressing above needs to be changed.
What organisms does Mepitel Ag work against?
In laboratory testing, Mepitel Ag has demonstrated a 4-log reduction against a range of clinically relevant organisms including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and several Candida species. These are in vitro results; consult your healthcare professional for clinical guidance.
Does Mepitel Ag require a secondary dressing?
Yes. Like the original Mepitel, Mepitel Ag is a wound contact layer that requires a secondary absorbent dressing on top to manage wound exudate. The secondary dressing can be changed as needed without removing the Mepitel Ag layer from the wound.
What sizes does Mepitel Ag come in?
Mepitel Ag is available in six sizes: 5 x 7.5 cm (10 per box), 7.5 x 10 cm (10 per box), 10 x 12 cm (10 per box), 10 x 18 cm (10 per box), 20 x 30 cm (5 per box), and 20 x 50 cm (2 per box). All dressings are individually sterile packed.
