Mepitel Film is Molnlycke's transparent, breathable film dressing with Safetac silicone adhesive technology. Unlike traditional film dressings that use acrylic adhesive, Mepitel Film adheres gently to the skin and removes without causing skin stripping or pain. It is designed to protect fragile and sensitive skin, manage superficial wounds, and help prevent skin breakdown. A Canadian multi-centre randomized controlled trial demonstrated that Mepitel Film significantly reduced radiotherapy-induced skin reactions in breast cancer patients. Available in 4 sizes, sold in boxes of 10 sterile dressings. Ships across Canada.

Mepitel Film is a thin, elastic polyurethane film with a Safetac soft silicone adhesive layer. Safetac is Molnlycke's proprietary technology, used across their Mepilex, Mepitel, and Mepiform product lines. The silicone adhesive bonds gently to dry, intact skin but does not stick to moist wound surfaces. This means the dressing can be repositioned during application and removed without stripping the skin or causing pain.

The film is fully transparent, allowing continuous visual monitoring of the skin or wound underneath without removing the dressing. It is showerproof, breathable, and acts as a barrier against bacteria and viruses larger than 25 nm. Mepitel Film maintains a moist environment while allowing excess moisture to pass through, and its adhesion level does not increase over time. It leaves no residue on removal.

Mepitel Film is commonly used for protection of fragile or sensitive skin, management of stage I and II pressure injuries, superficial burns, and superficial skin injuries. It can also serve as a protective cover over open surgical wounds, as a secondary dressing to fixate a primary dressing, or in combination with topical gels and ointments. Clinical research has shown Mepitel Film to be effective in preventing radiotherapy-induced skin reactions when applied from the first day of treatment.

Mepitel Film is not intended for use as primary fixation for IV lines, cannulae, ports, or other infusion or life-sustaining devices. It is not a wound contact layer and does not allow wound exudate to pass through to a secondary dressing. For exuding wounds requiring a wound contact layer, see Molnlycke's Mepitel or Mepitel One products.

All four sizes come in boxes of 10 individually sterile-packed dressings. For the smaller sizes (up to 10 x 12 cm), the dressing should overlap dry surrounding skin by 1-2 cm. For the larger sizes, a 5 cm overlap is recommended to ensure secure fixation.

Use the filters and sort options above to find the size you need. If you are unsure which size is appropriate, consult your healthcare professional for guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
What is Mepitel Film used for?

Mepitel Film is designed to protect fragile and sensitive skin and help prevent skin breakdown. Common uses include managing stage I and II pressure injuries, superficial burns, and superficial skin injuries. It can also be used as a protective cover for open surgical wounds, as a secondary dressing, or in combination with topical gels and ointments. Clinical studies have also demonstrated its effectiveness in preventing radiotherapy-induced skin reactions in breast cancer patients.

How is Mepitel Film different from traditional film dressings?

The key difference is the adhesive. Most film dressings use acrylic adhesive, which can cause skin stripping and pain on removal. Mepitel Film uses Molnlycke's Safetac soft silicone adhesive, which adheres gently to dry skin without increasing in adhesion over time. It can be removed without stripping the skin, causing pain, or leaving residue. This makes it particularly well suited for patients with fragile or sensitive skin.

How long can Mepitel Film be worn?

Mepitel Film may be left in place for several days, depending on the condition of the skin or wound and accepted clinical practice. The dressing is showerproof and its adhesion does not increase over wear time. If overlapping multiple dressings, note that vapour permeability is reduced in the overlapping area. Follow your healthcare professional's guidance for your specific situation.

What sizes does Mepitel Film come in?

Mepitel Film is available in four sizes: 6 x 7 cm, 10 x 12 cm, 10 x 25 cm, and 15 x 20 cm. All sizes are sold in boxes of 10 sterile dressings. For smaller sizes (up to 10 x 12 cm), the dressing should overlap surrounding dry skin by 1-2 cm. For the two larger sizes, a 5 cm overlap onto surrounding skin is recommended for secure fixation.

Can Mepitel Film be used to secure IV lines or ports?

No. Mepitel Film must not be used as primary fixation for IV lines, cannulae, ports, or other infusion or life-sustaining devices. It is also not a wound contact layer and does not allow exudate to pass through to a secondary dressing. For wounds that produce exudate and require a wound contact layer, Molnlycke's Mepitel or Mepitel One products are designed for that purpose.
