These dressings serve a dual purpose: they can be used for treatment of existing moderate to highly exuding sacral and heel wounds (including pressure injuries and surgical wounds such as pilonidal cyst excisions), and they can be used prophylactically to help prevent pressure injuries in high-risk patients. Clinical trials have demonstrated significant reductions in pressure injury incidence when these dressings are used as part of a comprehensive prevention protocol.
Like all Mepilex Border products, these dressings use Safetac silicone adhesive that seals wound edges to minimize maceration, allows painless dressing changes, and can be partially peeled back for skin inspection without full removal. The dressings are waterproof and bacteria-proof. When should I choose the Sacrum Ag version with silver?
The Mepilex Border Sacrum Ag (18 cm x 18 cm) includes silver sulfate for antimicrobial protection. It is designed for sacral wounds that show signs of infection or are at high risk of infection. If the wound is not infected or at risk, the standard sacrum dressings without silver may be more appropriate. Consult your healthcare provider to determine if a silver dressing is indicated.
Can the dressing be lifted for skin inspection?
Yes. The Safetac silicone adhesive allows the dressing to be partially peeled back so that the skin underneath can be inspected and assessed without fully removing the dressing. This is particularly important for prophylactic use, where daily skin checks are recommended. The dressing can be repositioned after inspection without losing its adhesive properties.
