Melgisorb is a range of alginate wound dressings from Molnlycke designed for moderate to heavily exuding wounds. Alginate dressings are made from natural fibres that form a gel on contact with wound fluid, absorbing and retaining exudate while maintaining a moist healing environment. The gel formation supports comfortable removal without damage to healing tissue.

The Melgisorb range is available in two lines. Melgisorb Plus is the standard version made from calcium sodium alginate - soft, highly absorbent, with haemostatic ability. Melgisorb Ag adds an ionic silver complex to the alginate and CMC fibres, providing sustained antimicrobial activity for up to 14 days (in vitro) and helping reduce wound odour.
Both lines include flat pad dressings for surface wounds and cavity dressings for packing deep wounds. All Melgisorb dressings are sterile, individually packaged, and require a secondary dressing for fixation. They work well under fixation tapes such as Mefix and can be used under compression bandages.
Frequently Asked Questions ▾
What is an alginate dressing?
Alginate dressings are made from natural fibres derived from seaweed. On contact with wound fluid or saline, the fibres absorb exudate and form a soft gel. This gel maintains a moist healing environment and supports comfortable removal at dressing changes without damaging new tissue.
What is the difference between Melgisorb Plus and Melgisorb Ag?
Melgisorb Plus is the standard calcium sodium alginate dressing - soft, highly absorbent, with haemostatic ability. Melgisorb Ag adds an ionic silver complex to the alginate and CMC fibres, providing sustained antimicrobial activity for up to 14 days (in vitro). Melgisorb Ag also features high fibre strength for one-piece removal and can help reduce wound odour. Your healthcare provider can help determine which version is appropriate.
What types of wounds are Melgisorb dressings designed for?
Melgisorb dressings are intended for moderate to heavily exuding wounds including pressure injuries, venous and arterial ulcers, diabetic ulcers, post-operative wounds, trauma wounds, graft and donor sites, and burns. They are not indicated for dry or lightly exuding wounds. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance on appropriate wound care.
Do Melgisorb dressings require a secondary dressing?
Yes. All Melgisorb dressings are primary wound contact dressings and require fixation with a secondary dressing. Melgisorb Ag specifically requires a non-occlusive secondary dressing. Your healthcare provider can recommend the best secondary dressing for your wound type.
Can Melgisorb dressings be used under compression?
Yes. Both Melgisorb Plus and Melgisorb Ag can be used under compression bandages. This makes them suitable for managing exuding wounds on the lower limbs where compression therapy is part of the treatment plan.
