Melgisorb Ag is a highly absorbent antimicrobial alginate dressing from Molnlycke composed of calcium alginate and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) fibres with an ionic silver complex. On contact with wound exudate, the silver releases ions that provide a sustained antimicrobial effect against a broad spectrum of wound-related microorganisms - in vitro testing shows this effect for up to 14 days. As wound fluid is absorbed, the alginate forms a gel that aids autolytic debridement while maintaining a moist healing environment. The gel supports intact removal without damage to healing tissue. Melgisorb Ag can also help reduce wound odour.

Melgisorb Ag is indicated for moderate to heavily exuding partial to full thickness wounds including post-operative wounds, trauma wounds, leg ulcers, pressure injuries, diabetic ulcers, graft and donor sites, cavity wounds, and superficial and partial thickness burns. It may be used in the management of infected wounds under the supervision of a healthcare professional, and can be used under compression bandages. The alginate component may also assist in supporting the control of minor bleeding in superficial wounds.

This collection includes 4 sizes: three flat pad dressings (5 x 5cm, 10 x 10cm, and 15 x 15cm) and one cavity dressing (3 x 44cm) for packing deep wounds. All sizes come in boxes of 10. All dressings require a non-occlusive secondary dressing for fixation. If antimicrobial protection is not required, see our Melgisorb Plus Alginate Dressings collection for the standard non-silver version.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
What sizes does Melgisorb Ag come in?

Melgisorb Ag is available in four sizes: 5 x 5cm, 10 x 10cm, and 15 x 15cm flat pads, plus a 3 x 44cm cavity dressing for packing deep wounds. All sizes come in boxes of 10 sterile individually packaged dressings.

How long does the antimicrobial effect last?

In vitro testing shows the antimicrobial effect of Melgisorb Ag is sustained for up to 14 days. The dressing itself can remain in place for up to 7 days depending on wound condition and exudate level. Initially, it may be necessary to change the dressing every 24 hours. Your healthcare provider will advise on the appropriate change frequency.

What is the difference between Melgisorb Plus and Melgisorb Ag?

Both are alginate dressings that gel on contact with wound fluid. Melgisorb Plus is the standard non-silver version made from calcium sodium alginate. Melgisorb Ag adds an ionic silver complex to the alginate and CMC fibres, providing sustained antimicrobial activity. Melgisorb Ag also features high fibre strength for one-piece removal. Your healthcare provider can help determine which version is appropriate for your wound.

Can Melgisorb Ag be used on infected wounds?

Melgisorb Ag may be used in the management of infected wounds or wounds with an increased risk of infection, under the medical supervision of a healthcare professional. In the event of clinical infection, topical silver does not replace the need for systemic therapy or other adequate infection treatment.

Does Melgisorb Ag need to be removed before an MRI?

Yes. Melgisorb Ag must be removed prior to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examinations. Contact with electrodes or conductive gels during electronic measurements such as ECG and EEG should also be avoided while the dressing is in place.
