Biatain Ibu dressings from Coloplast are absorbent polyurethane foam dressings that contain 0.5 mg/cm2 of ibuprofen homogeneously dispersed throughout the foam matrix. In the presence of wound exudate, the ibuprofen is released directly into the wound bed, providing local pain relief throughout the wear time of up to 7 days. This collection includes non-adhesive and soft-hold formats for different skin and fixation needs.

The 3DFit foam structure conforms to the wound bed for superior absorption even under compression. The ibuprofen is released when the foam contacts wound exudate, providing a sustained low dose of local pain relief between dressing changes. Comparative studies cited by Coloplast have shown a reduction in wound pain in patients wearing Biatain Ibu compared with dressings without ibuprofen.

Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive dressings have no adhesive and require secondary fixation such as tape or compression wrapping. They are a soft, flexible dressing with bevelled edges that reduce the risk of pressure marks during wear. Available in 4 sizes: 10 x 10cm, 10 x 20cm, 15 x 15cm, and 20 x 20cm. Indicated for leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, non-infected diabetic foot ulcers, second-degree burns, donor sites, postoperative wounds, and skin abrasions.

Biatain Ibu Soft-Hold dressings have a partially adherent layer that provides gentle adhesion without a full adhesive border. They stay in place with light contact, which can be helpful on sensitive skin. Available in 2 sizes: 10 x 10cm and 10 x 20cm. Indicated for the same wound types as the non-adhesive version, but should not be used on donor sites.

Both formats can be used in combination with compression therapy. They are not made with natural rubber latex.

For wounds that are not painful and do not need ibuprofen, the standard Biatain Foam provides the same 3DFit absorption without the added medication. For wounds that are infected, Biatain Ag Foam provides antimicrobial silver. For heavily exuding wounds, Biatain Super offers maximum absorption. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance on whether ibuprofen-releasing dressings are appropriate for your wound.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
How does Biatain Ibu deliver pain relief?

The foam contains ibuprofen at a concentration of 0.5 mg/cm2, evenly distributed throughout the foam matrix. When the dressing contacts wound exudate, the ibuprofen is released directly into the wound bed. This provides sustained local pain relief throughout the wear time of up to 7 days. The ibuprofen acts locally at the wound site rather than systemically through the bloodstream.

What is the difference between Non-Adhesive and Soft-Hold?

Non-adhesive has no adhesive at all and requires secondary fixation such as tape or compression wrapping. It has bevelled edges to reduce pressure marks and is available in 4 sizes. Soft-hold has a partially adherent layer that provides gentle adhesion without a full border, so it stays in place with lighter contact. Soft-hold is available in 2 sizes and should not be used on donor sites. Both contain the same ibuprofen concentration and foam core.

What sizes are available in Biatain Ibu?

The non-adhesive version comes in 4 sizes: 10 x 10cm, 10 x 20cm, 15 x 15cm, and 20 x 20cm. The soft-hold version comes in 2 sizes: 10 x 10cm and 10 x 20cm. Both square and rectangular options are available across the range.

Can Biatain Ibu be used under compression therapy?

Yes. Both the non-adhesive and soft-hold versions are suitable for use in combination with compression therapy. The 3DFit foam maintains its absorption properties and ibuprofen release under compression. The non-adhesive format works particularly well under compression wrapping, where the bandage serves as the fixation method.

How long can Biatain Ibu dressings be worn?

These dressings can be worn for up to 7 days. The ibuprofen is released throughout the entire wear time as long as the dressing is in contact with wound exudate. Change the dressing when it reaches its absorption capacity, if pain relief diminishes, or as directed by your healthcare provider.
