Biatain Ag Foam dressings from Coloplast are soft, conformable polyurethane foam dressings with a patented silver complex homogeneously dispersed throughout the foam matrix. They are designed for exuding wounds with delayed healing due to bacteria, or where there is a risk of infection. The 3DFit foam conforms closely to the wound bed for superior absorption while the silver provides a continuous antibacterial effect during the entire wear time of up to 7 days.

The sustained silver release profile ensures a homogeneous distribution of silver ions throughout wear, providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria commonly found in infected non-healing wounds, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and beta-haemolytic Streptococcus. In the presence of exudate, silver is continuously released into the wound bed. The 3DFit foam structure absorbs exudate vertically and locks it away, which minimizes the risk of maceration and leakage while maintaining a moist healing environment.

Biatain Ag Adhesive dressings have a hydrocolloid adhesive border and are available in 3 formats: a standard 18 x 18cm square, a 23 x 23cm anatomically shaped sacral dressing for the coccyx area, and a 19 x 20cm heel dressing. These are suited for high-friction areas where secure adhesion is needed.

Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive dressings have no adhesive border and require secondary fixation such as tape or compression wrapping. They are well suited for use on wounds with fragile periwound skin or under compression bandaging. Available in 5 sizes from 5 x 7cm to 20 x 20cm.

All Biatain Ag Foam dressings are indicated for leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, second-degree burns, donor sites, postoperative wounds, and skin abrasions. They can be used in combination with compression therapy and are not made with natural rubber latex.

For wounds that are not infected and do not require antimicrobial protection, the standard Biatain Foam provides the same 3DFit absorption without silver. For a gentler silicone adhesive with silver, Biatain Silicone Ag is available in bordered format. For heavily exuding wounds that need maximum absorption, Biatain Super uses a hydrocapillary pad. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance on whether antimicrobial protection is appropriate for your wound.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
When should Biatain Ag be used instead of regular Biatain Foam?

Biatain Ag is intended for wounds that are infected or considered at risk of infection. Signs that may indicate infection include increased redness, heat, swelling, pain, or odour around the wound. Your healthcare provider will assess whether antimicrobial protection is needed. Biatain Ag should not be used as a routine first-choice dressing on clean, non-infected wounds where the standard Biatain Foam would be appropriate.

How long does the silver remain active?

According to Coloplast, the patented silver complex provides a sustained release of silver ions during the entire wear time of up to 7 days. The silver is released in the presence of wound exudate, so antibacterial activity begins as soon as the dressing contacts wound fluid and continues throughout wear. Change the dressing as directed by your healthcare provider.

What is the difference between Biatain Ag Adhesive and Non-Adhesive?

Biatain Ag Adhesive has a hydrocolloid adhesive border for secure placement without additional tape. It is available in standard, sacral, and heel shapes. Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive has no adhesive and requires secondary fixation such as tape or compression wrapping. Non-adhesive is preferred when periwound skin is fragile or when the dressing will be used under compression bandaging. Both contain the same patented silver complex and 3DFit foam core.

What sizes and shapes are available?

The adhesive range includes a standard 18 x 18cm square, a 23 x 23cm sacral shape for the coccyx area, and a 19 x 20cm heel shape. The non-adhesive range includes 5 sizes: 5 x 7cm, 10 x 10cm, 10 x 20cm, 15 x 15cm, and 20 x 20cm. The sacral and heel shapes are anatomically contoured to fit those specific body areas.

Can Biatain Ag Foam dressings be used under compression?

Yes. Both the adhesive and non-adhesive versions can be used in combination with compression therapy. The 3DFit foam maintains its absorption and silver release properties under compression. The non-adhesive format is particularly well suited for use under compression wrapping, where the compression bandage serves as the fixation method.
