Biatain Foam dressings from Coloplast are soft, conformable polyurethane foam dressings that use a unique 3DFit foam structure to absorb and retain wound exudate. The foam conforms closely to the wound bed, reducing the risk of dead space where bacteria can grow, and locks fluid away while maintaining a moist healing environment. This collection includes adhesive, non-adhesive, sacral, and soft-hold formats to suit different wound locations and skin conditions.

Biatain Adhesive dressings have a hydrocolloid adhesive border that provides secure adhesion, making them well suited for wounds on areas with healthy periwound skin or locations that need extra hold due to friction. They are available in 4 square sizes from 7.5 x 7.5cm to 18 x 18cm, plus 2 anatomically shaped sacral dressings (17 x 17cm small sacral and 23 x 23cm large sacral) designed for the coccyx area where friction and shear are common concerns.

Biatain Non-Adhesive dressings have no adhesive layer and require secondary fixation such as tape or compression wrapping. They are well suited for wounds with very fragile periwound skin where adhesive contact could cause further damage. The bevelled edges reduce the risk of pressure marks during wear. Available in 5 sizes from 5 x 7cm to 20 x 20cm.

Biatain Soft-Hold is a partially adherent foam dressing that provides gentle adhesion without the firmer hold of a full hydrocolloid border. It uses a vapour-permeable top film that is waterproof and bacteria-proof. Soft-Hold can be used for leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, second-degree burns, postoperative wounds, and skin abrasions, and is suitable under compression therapy. It should not be used on donor sites.

All Biatain Foam dressings can be worn for up to 7 days depending on wound conditions and exudate levels. They can be used in combination with compression therapy. They are not made with natural rubber latex.

For a gentler adhesive that minimizes pain at removal, consider Biatain Silicone dressings which use a soft silicone adhesive layer instead of hydrocolloid. For wounds that are infected or at risk of infection, Biatain Ag Foam dressings provide the same foam core with added antimicrobial silver. For heavily exuding wounds that need greater absorption capacity, Biatain Super uses a hydrocapillary pad. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance on dressing selection.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
What is the difference between Biatain Adhesive and Biatain Non-Adhesive?

Biatain Adhesive has a hydrocolloid adhesive border that holds the dressing in place on the skin without additional tape. Biatain Non-Adhesive has no adhesive and requires secondary fixation such as medical tape or compression wrapping. Non-adhesive is preferred when periwound skin is very fragile or when the dressing will be held in place by compression bandaging. Both use the same 3DFit foam core for absorption.

What is Biatain Soft-Hold and when would I use it?

Biatain Soft-Hold has a partially adherent layer that provides gentle adhesion between the firm hold of an adhesive dressing and the zero adhesion of a non-adhesive dressing. It stays in place without strong adhesive contact, which can be helpful on sensitive skin or wounds where full adhesive removal would be uncomfortable. It is suitable for use under compression therapy but should not be used on donor sites.

What are the Biatain Sacral dressings used for?

The sacral dressings are anatomically shaped to fit the coccyx and sacral area, which is one of the most common sites for pressure injuries. Their shape is designed to stay in place on this curved, high-friction area without bunching or folding. They are available in a small (17 x 17cm) and large (23 x 23cm) format. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance on sizing.

How is Biatain Foam different from Biatain Silicone?

The main difference is the adhesive type. Biatain Foam uses a hydrocolloid adhesive border that provides a firmer hold, while Biatain Silicone uses a soft silicone adhesive that is gentler on the skin and reduces pain during removal. Both use the same 3DFit foam core for absorption. Silicone adhesive is generally preferred for fragile or sensitive skin, while hydrocolloid adhesive may be better on high-friction areas where a stronger hold is needed.

How long can Biatain Foam dressings be worn?

Biatain Foam dressings can be worn for up to 7 days depending on the amount of wound exudate. Change the dressing when exudate reaches the edge of the foam pad, if the dressing begins to lift or shows signs of saturation, or as directed by your healthcare provider. More heavily exuding wounds will require more frequent changes.
