Exufiber is a gelling fibre dressing range from Molnlycke made from highly absorbent polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibres. On contact with wound fluid, the fibres absorb exudate and transform into a soft, conformable gel. This helps maintain a moist healing environment, supports autolytic debridement, and allows for comfortable removal during dressing changes.

The Exufiber range is available in two lines. Exufiber Gelling Fibre Dressings are the standard non-silver version, featuring Hydrolock Technology for high tensile strength and one-piece removal. Exufiber Ag+ Antimicrobial Gelling Fibre Dressings add silver sulphate coated on both sides of the dressing for antimicrobial protection in wounds where bioburden management is needed.
Both lines include flat pad dressings for surface wounds and ribbon dressings for packing cavity and tunnelling wounds. All Exufiber dressings are sterile, individually packaged, and require a secondary dressing for fixation. They can be used under compression therapy. The standard Exufiber range can stay in place for up to 7 days and is safe during radiation therapy, X-ray, and MRI.
Exufiber dressings are intended for a wide range of exuding wounds including leg and foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, partial thickness burns, surgical wounds, donor sites, and malignant wounds. Consult your healthcare provider to determine which Exufiber product is appropriate for your wound care needs.
Frequently Asked Questions ▾
What is Exufiber made from?
Exufiber is made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gelling fibres. These fibres absorb wound fluid and transform into a soft gel, helping maintain a moist wound environment. The standard version features Hydrolock Technology for high tensile strength and one-piece removal. The Ag+ version adds silver sulphate coating for antimicrobial activity.
Do I need a standard Exufiber or the Ag+ silver version?
Standard Exufiber is designed for general use on exuding wounds. Exufiber Ag+ adds silver sulphate for antimicrobial protection and is intended for wounds where bioburden management is needed. Your healthcare provider can help determine which version is appropriate for your wound.
What types of wounds is Exufiber designed for?
Exufiber dressings are intended for a wide range of exuding wounds including leg and foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, partial thickness burns, surgical wounds, donor sites, and malignant wounds. Exufiber is not intended for dry wounds. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance on appropriate wound care.
What is the difference between a pad and a ribbon dressing?
Pad dressings are flat and designed to cover surface wounds. Ribbon dressings are narrow strips designed to be loosely packed into cavity wounds, tunnelling wounds, or sinus tracts. Both formats use the same PVA gelling fibre material and work the same way on contact with wound fluid.
Can Exufiber be used under compression therapy?
Yes. Exufiber dressings are highly absorbent even under compression. The high fluid retention capacity helps prevent leakage and maceration when used with compression bandaging. A secondary dressing is required for fixation over the Exufiber dressing.
