Aquacel Ag+ Extra Hydrofiber dressings in Canada — shop ConvaTec's enhanced silver Hydrofiber wound dressings, designed for moderate to heavily exuding wounds where antimicrobial protection and high absorbency are needed. Unlike the Aquacel Foam lines, these are flat Hydrofiber sheets — not foam dressings — and require a secondary cover dressing to hold them in place.

How Aquacel Ag+ Extra Hydrofiber works: This dressing is made from two layers of Hydrofiber technology stitched together with strengthening fibres, making it nine times stronger and significantly more absorbent than the original Aquacel Ag. On contact with wound fluid, the Hydrofiber layers gel and conform closely to the wound bed, locking in exudate through vertical absorption rather than letting it spread laterally across the skin. Ionic silver within the fibres provides sustained antimicrobial activity for up to 14 days, effective against a broad range of wound-related bacteria and yeasts.

Who are these dressings for? Aquacel Ag+ Extra Hydrofiber dressings are commonly used as a primary wound contact layer on acute and chronic wounds including leg ulcers, pressure injuries, diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds, and partial-thickness burns. Because this is a flat sheet dressing without a foam layer or waterproof backing, it must be covered with a secondary dressing — such as a foam dressing, film, or gauze — to protect the wound and secure it in place. If you need an all-in-one solution that doesn't require a secondary dressing, see the Aquacel Ag Foam Adhesive collection.

Sizes available: This collection includes 4 sizes: 5 cm × 5 cm, 10 cm × 10 cm, 15 cm × 15 cm, and 20 cm × 30 cm. The dressings can be cut to fit the wound shape. All products are sterile, latex-free, and sold by the box.

Aquacel Ag+ Extra Hydrofiber Dressings FAQ

What is the difference between Aquacel Ag+ Extra Hydrofiber and Aquacel Ag Foam?
Aquacel Ag+ Extra Hydrofiber is a flat, non-woven sheet dressing — it has no foam padding, no waterproof backing, and no adhesive border. It's designed to sit directly on the wound bed as a primary contact layer and must be covered with a secondary dressing. Aquacel Ag Foam dressings are multi-layer products that combine Hydrofiber with a foam pad and waterproof film, offering an all-in-one solution. Choose the Hydrofiber sheet when your clinician wants a primary contact layer under a specific secondary dressing, or when high conformability to the wound bed is needed.
Do I need a secondary dressing with Aquacel Ag+ Extra?
Yes. Aquacel Ag+ Extra Hydrofiber is a primary wound contact dressing only. It must be covered with an appropriate secondary dressing to protect the wound, manage moisture, and secure it in place. Common secondary dressings include foam dressings, transparent film, or gauze secured with tape or a bandage wrap. Your clinician will recommend the best secondary dressing for your wound type.
How long does the antimicrobial silver remain active?
ConvaTec states that the ionic silver in Aquacel Ag+ Extra provides sustained antimicrobial activity for up to 14 days. However, the dressing itself should be changed based on clinical need — typically when it becomes saturated or as directed by your clinician. The silver is released in a controlled manner as wound fluid is absorbed into the Hydrofiber fibres.
Can Aquacel Ag+ Extra Hydrofiber dressings be cut to size?
Yes. The dressing can be cut to fit the wound shape before application. This is especially useful for irregularly shaped wounds or when a standard size doesn't match the wound dimensions. Choose a size that provides at least 1 cm of overlap beyond the wound edge on all sides, then trim as needed.
What makes the "Extra" version different from the original Aquacel Ag?
The "Extra" designation means the dressing is constructed from two layers of Hydrofiber stitched together with strengthening fibres. ConvaTec reports this makes it nine times stronger and significantly more absorbent than the original single-layer Aquacel Ag. The enhanced strength means the dressing holds together better during removal, reducing the risk of leaving fibres in the wound bed.
