What It Is
Normal Saline 0.9% Sodium Chloride Irrigation Solution, USP is sterile salt water. It contains 0.9% sodium chloride — the same salt level as your blood and body fluids. Because it matches your body, it is used for cleaning wounds and rinsing tissue without stinging or causing cell damage.
It contains no preservatives, no antimicrobial agents, and no added buffers. It is sterile, sealed, and intended for single use only.
What It's Used For
Normal saline is used for rinsing, cleaning, and flushing during wound care and clinical procedures:
- Wound irrigation — is used for cleaning cuts, surgical sites, and chronic wounds
- Clinical procedures — is used for flushing body cavities, tissues, and surgical drainage tubes

Normal saline matches the salt level in your blood (isotonic). That means it is used for wound irrigation without disrupting your cells or tissue. Sterile water has no salt (hypotonic), which means it can be absorbed by tissue and may cause cells to swell or burst if used on open wounds or during surgery.
If you're cleaning a wound, normal saline is the safer choice. It's what hospitals use as the standard irrigation solution.
