A monofilament is a small plastic tool used to screen for loss of feeling in the feet in people with diabetes. The 10-gram monofilament bends at a known pressure, so the clinician can check whether the patient feels the touch at standard test points on the foot.
Early loss of feeling is a warning sign of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and a higher risk of foot ulcers.
